A Perfect Day in Glen Ellen: Where to Wander, Taste, and Linger
There's a version of Wine Country that most people miss entirely.
It's not in the grand tasting rooms off Highway 29 or the Instagram-famous spots with hour-long wait times. It's in the smaller places — the creek paths where nobody else is walking, the biodynamic vineyard where the chickens roam between the rows, the bakery where the croissants are gone by 10am if you're not paying attention. It's in the valley that Jack London chose for his ranch, that generations of winemakers have quietly called home, and that somehow still feels like a discovery.
That place is Glen Ellen.
We've been here long enough to know this valley the way locals know it — not just the highlights, but the rhythm of a good day. The way the morning light comes in soft over Sonoma Mountain. The way the hills turn that impossible green after the first winter rain. The way a Tuesday afternoon feels different here than anywhere else in the world. And we've put together what we think is the ideal day — the kind that ends at our table, when you're exactly ready for something beautiful.
Morning: Start With the Land
The best way to understand Glen Ellen is to walk it first.
Jack London State Historic Park sits practically in our backyard, and there's no better orientation to this valley than a morning on the Beauty Ranch Trail. London chose this land for a reason — the views, the oak trees, the sense of being tucked into something protected and alive. The Wolf House ruins are haunting and gorgeous, especially in the early light. Plan for two hours minimum, more if you want to wander.
Before you head in, or on your way back out, stop at Les Pascales. It's a proper French bakery — the kind that makes you wonder why you'd ever eat a croissant anywhere else. Get there early. The pastries move fast and for good reason. Pick up something for the trail, or sit for a moment and let the morning slow down the way it should.
Midday: Lunch on the Deck, Then Into the Vines
There's no better lunch in Glen Ellen than the deck at the Jack London Saloon.
It's unpretentious, it's local, it's exactly what a Wine Country afternoon should feel like — cold drink in hand, sun on your face, the easy energy of a neighborhood place that's been here forever and knows it. Order something simple, sit outside, and take your time. You're in no rush.
When you're ready, head to Benziger Family Winery. Their biodynamic farming practices are genuinely fascinating — the tram tour through the estate is one of the better Wine Country experiences you can have, because it's actually educational. You leave understanding something about the land, the soil, the way farming philosophy shows up in a glass. That's rare, and it's worth the stop.
From there, follow the road to Little Vineyards. Smaller, quieter, and deeply Sonoma Valley in the best sense. Family-owned, unhurried, with wines that reward attention. This is the kind of tasting room where a conversation with the person pouring can turn into an hour you didn't plan on, and you won't mind at all.
The rule we'd suggest: do two tastings and let them be enough. You'll want your palate awake for dinner.
Afternoon: Slow Down and Wander
This is the part of the day most itineraries skip, and it's the most important.
Quarryhill Botanical Garden is one of the great hidden treasures of Sonoma Valley — a world-class collection of Asian flora set into the hillside with views that go on forever. It's peaceful in a way that recalibrates something. Walk slowly. Read the signs. Let the afternoon stretch out.
Then make your way to Wine Country Chocolates for a stop that's impossible to regret. Handmade truffles, real ingredients, the kind of chocolate shop that reminds you what the word "craft" actually means. Pick up a box for the table, or just taste your way through the afternoon. Either way, it belongs in the day.
Pre-Dinner: Schermeister
Before you come to us, come to Schermeister — you'll find them right here in our building.
It's the ideal way to ease into the evening. A glass of something local, good company, the particular energy of a Wine Country space that knows exactly what it is. Let the day land. Let the conversation start. By the time you walk through our door, you'll be exactly in the right mood for what's coming.
Evening: The Table at Songbird
Reservations open 30 days in advance and weekends move fast — if you're planning ahead, that's when to book.
By the time you arrive for dinner, you'll have been in this valley long enough to understand why we cook the way we do. The menu is built around what the farmers brought in that week — sometimes that morning — from the plots and orchards within a few miles of our kitchen. Nothing on the table traveled far, and you can taste the difference.
The Chef's Tasting Menu is six courses and the best way to experience what the season is actually doing right now. It changes constantly, pairing the valley's finest ingredients with local wines from the winemakers we've been building relationships with for years. If you want to know what Sonoma Valley tastes like — not the generic version, but the real, specific, right-now version — this is the way.
On Sundays, our Hot Honey Fried Chicken is the thing. It has developed something of a following, and for good reason. Order it with a glass of chilled rosé and sit outside if the evening allows. It is, as one guest put it, the perfect balance of sophisticated and satisfying — which is really all we're ever trying to be.
Dinner here tends to run long, not because the service is slow but because people don't want to leave. The candlelight, the conversation, the sound of the valley settling into evening — there's a reason guests tell us the experience just feels so good.
