Dining in Sonoma Valley: The Case for Slowing Down
There's a version of wine country that moves fast. You hit three tasting rooms before noon, squeeze in a lunch reservation someone else recommended, and spend the afternoon on a schedule that starts to feel like work. That version exists. You can do it.
But Glen Ellen doesn't want you to.
Glen Ellen — our village, population just over 700 — operates on a different frequency. It's the kind of place where the same faces greet you at the coffee shop and the saloon, where the creek sounds the same in December as it does in July, and where the best thing to do on any given day is exactly nothing pressing. What it lacks in square footage it more than makes up for in character, and its dining scene reflects that in the best possible way.
Here's how we'd spend a day eating and drinking our way through the valley, starting at first light.
Morning: Pillowfight Coffee
There's no better way to start a Glen Ellen day than with a coffee in Kenwood, and Pillowfight has become the neighborhood's gathering place almost since the day it opened. Named for the area's beloved World Pillow Fight Championships — yes, that's a real and wonderful thing — it's the kind of cozy coffee shop that makes you want to linger over a latte and a slice of their seasonal quiche longer than you planned. Which is exactly the point. https://pillowfight.coffee/
Lunch: The Mill at Glen Ellen
Tucked into Jack London Village — itself a historic site, with roots going back to an 1839 redwood mill built by General Mariano Vallejo — The Mill is one of those spots that earns its setting. The outdoor deck overlooks the creek, the menu is rooted in California cuisine with serious vegetarian and vegan options, and they brew their own draft beer. Owner and chef Sanjeev opened it during the pandemic and built something the community genuinely needed: a warm, unhurried place to eat well and stay awhile. https://themillatglenellen.com/
Afternoon: The Saloon at the Jack London Lodge
After lunch, the right move is to wander down Arnold Drive to The Saloon — and not just because it's one of the most historically charming spots in the entire valley. This is where winery owners and winemakers belly up alongside first-time visitors, where the wine list punches well above what you'd expect, and where the creekside patio on a summer afternoon feels like something out of a postcard. Come for a glass. Stay for two. Lose track of time in the best possible way. Don’t miss their Thursday evening music before heading out to dinner. https://www.jacklondonlodge.com/jacklondonlodge-dining
Dinner: Poppy
In the former Fig Cafe space on Arnold Drive, Sondra Bernstein and John Toulze — the team behind The Girl & The Fig — opened Poppy last year, and it's already one of the most talked-about additions to the valley's dining scene. The menu is a love letter to the south of France: cassoulet, escargots, crispy roast chicken, moules, seasonal salads with local strawberries and good butter used without apology. It captures the fresh, honest simplicity of French countryside cooking using seasonal ingredients and classic technique — and it feels completely at home here in Sonoma. https://www.poppyglenellen.com/
Worth the Short Drive: Salt & Stone and Golden Bear Station
Two more stops worth building your itinerary around, both just a few minutes down Sonoma Highway:
Salt & Stone in Kenwood has been a valley institution for years — steak, seafood, an oyster bar, craft cocktails, and an outdoor patio with vineyard views that earned it Best Outdoor Dining in Sonoma County. It's the kind of place that works for every occasion, from a casual weekday lunch to a proper celebration. https://www.saltstonekenwood.com/
Golden Bear Station, also in Kenwood, is the newer entry and already making waves. From the award-winning team behind Animo and Mu Ramen, it brings a European bistro sensibility to the valley — think Roman-style pastas, wiener schnitzel, steak frites — set inside a beautifully converted former roadside filling station from the 1930s. It's the kind of place that reminds you how exciting independent restaurant culture can be when it's done with real intention. https://goldenbearstation.com/
